Industry stats: .au domains reach a new all-time record

Want to know how many .au domains are out there in the world? Thankfully, the .au Domain Administration (auDA) publishes that info every month.

Their Registry Monthly Statistics give us updated data of all registered .au domains, and a few other interesting stats. The most recent data goes up to March 2026, and here's what it tells us.

How many .au domains are there? #

The most recent reported total is 4,336,499 domains, roughly 1 for every 6 Australians. This is a new all-time record. The total crossed 4.3 millions at the satrt of this year and has grown month-on-month since. The namespace has added 41,586 domains since December 2025.

How many new .au domains were added in the last year? #

In the last year there has been a 1.8% increase in .au domains — up from 1.5% growth in December 2025. New domain registrations have been running strongly across Q1 2026:

The March figure is particularly notable — 63,419 new domains is 20.9% more than March 2025 (52,459).

  • Unsurprisingly, com.au domains are the most popular choice, with a total of 3,248,234 com.au domains — an increase of 1.9% year-on-year.
  • The second most popular option is to use just .au directly. Of all namespaces, .au direct has grown the most year-on-year with 3.2% growth. There are currently 797,892 .au direct domains registered — just 2,108 away from the 800,000 milestone.
  • The third most popular namespace is net.au, which continues its long-running decline, down approximately 5.2% year-on-year, with 182,207 domains currently registered.
  • Other namespaces: org.au has 69,626 domains registered | edu.au 17,450 | gov.au 6,616 | id.au 11,998 | asn.au 2,590.
